Visiting Students & Veterinary Externs

As part of your REC Equine Specialists experience, you will be able to observe and participate in hospital and stable rounds, case workups and treatments, surgeries, yearling radiographs (if timing permits), and ambulatory veterinary services.

ABOUT US
REC Equine Specialists based in Horsley Park, NSW is a 28 veterinarian, purely equine practice. The practice services a wide range of horses, from miniature ponies to elite Thoroughbred racehorses. Although we have extensive experience servicing the Thoroughbred racing industry, a wide range of breeds and conditions are treated on a daily basis.  Our hospital facilities include four surgery suites, imaging suites (digital radiology, ultrasound, videoendoscopy, CT and nuclear scintigraphy). The practice includes specialists in the fields of surgery, anaesthesia, intensive care and medicine. The practice is supported by a fully equipped on-site laboratory.

INTRODUCTION
On your first day, you will be given a tour of the practice and may be assigned a nurse or intern to oversee your stay. An overview of your activities and anticipated participation with the practice will be outlined. At this point we ask you to clearly articulate to the nurse/intern or veterinarian present your level of experience with horses and horse handling capabilities. 

PRE-REQUISITES TO ATTEND AN EXTERNSHIP AT REC SPECIALIST EQUINE CENTRE:

HOURS: Standard hours are Monday – Friday 7.30am – 5:30pm. Students are required to be available to participate in after hours care as requested by the clinicians e.g. intensive care, afterhours emergencies, monitoring and treating foals as part of our foal team’ etc. 

INSURANCE
If you are currently enrolled at university, your course will need to provide proof of insurance. If you are not currently enrolled, you will need to provide your own insurance (personal injury and liability), which must be presented prior to commencement.

CLOTHING: Jeans, polo and jacket which is in keeping with professional image of this practice.   

FOOTWEAR: Appropriate footwear (heavy duty closed toe shoes or boots).

NAME TAGS: A name tag must be worn at all times.

PAPERWORK: If you have assessment forms that need to be completed, it is up to you to present them to your supervisor to be filled in at the time of your visit.

LUNCH: Lunch is provided for employees only. Please bring your own lunch.
