Our History

REC Equine Specialists (formerly Randwick Equine Centre) was established by world renowned equine veterinarian Dr Percy Sykes in 1951.

Dr Percy Sykes was a legendary equine veterinarian who played a pivotal role in modernising veterinary practices in Australian horse racing. Born in Sudan in 1920 and trained in London, Sykes served as a veterinary officer in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps during World War II. He immigrated to Australia in 1951, where he established P.E. Sykes & Partners, which later became Randwick Equine Centre and more recently REC Equine Specialists.

Sykes' contributions extended well beyond routine horse treatments to include pioneering diagnostic and therapeutic methods, such as the use of blood samples for training aids, endoscopy, ultrasonography, and arthroscopy. Under his leadership, Randwick Equine Centre (now known as REC Equine Specialists) became a leading institution in equine veterinary science, offering advanced diagnostic and surgical services.

The practice rapidly expanded during the 1960’s, attracting a small team of aspiring talented young equine veterinarians and established a pathology laboratory with Percy as a world pioneer in the use of blood samples as a health and training aid for racehorses.
